DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT PETS IN ARGENTINA

Argentina enforces strict veterinary and import/export laws through SENASA (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria).

Requirements can vary depending on whether pets are entering Argentina from abroad or travelling between provinces.

DOG AND CATS

  • Microchip identification: Strongly recommended, though not always mandatory. Essential for international relocations.

  • Rabies vaccination certificate: Mandatory for dogs and cats over 3 months of age. Must be valid and issued at least 30 days before entry.

  • Health certificate: Issued by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin, validated by official authorities, and presented to SENASA on arrival.

  • SENASA Veterinary Certificate: Required for pets travelling out of Argentina or entering from abroad.

  • Internal transport: Between provinces, pets generally require a valid health certificate confirming they are free from contagious diseases.

⚠️Special rule: Certain provinces may request proof of up-to-date vaccinations (beyond rabies) when travelling domestically, especially in areas with stricter animal health controls.

BIRDS

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days before travel.

  • Import/export permit from SENASA.

  • CITES documentation for exotic or endangered birds (e.g., parrots, cockatoos, macaws).

  • Quarantine may apply for birds entering from countries with avian influenza risks.

⚠️Note: Argentina is particularly strict on parrot species, requiring additional permits to protect against illegal trafficking.

SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

For small animals such as ferrets, rabbits, and rodents:

  • Veterinary health certificate required for domestic and international transport.

  • Rabies vaccination: Compulsory for ferrets. Rabbits and rodents generally exempt but must be declared healthy and parasite-free.

  • SENASA permit: May be required for ferrets and certain exotic mammals.

⚠️Some provinces, particularly in Patagonia, may impose additional restrictions on the entry of small animals to protect local ecosystems.

MOST  TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN ARGENTINA

The most common animals we transport in Argentina are:

  • Dogs and cats – the majority of relocations, especially to and from Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Mendoza.

  • Birds – including canaries, parakeets, cockatiels, and parrots, popular as household pets across the country.

  • Small mammals – such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, and hamsters, often transported for family relocations within Argentina or internationally.

Each journey is carefully adapted to the animal’s species, temperament, and travel needs, ensuring comfort and compliance with both national and provincial regulations.
