PET TRAVEL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ITALY

When transporting pets to or within Italy, it is essential to meet all Italian Ministry of Health and EU requirements. We handle all paperwork and veterinary appointments on your behalf to guarantee full compliance.

To transport dogs or cats to Italy, the following documents are required:

  • EU Pet Passport or, for pets coming from outside the EU, and Animal Health Certificate issued by an authorised veterinarian.

  • Rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before entry.

  • Microchip identification compliant with ISO 11784/11785 standards.

  • Tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment for dogs coming from certain high-risk countries.

  • Veterinary clinical exam to confirm the pet is fit to travel.

We schedule all required vet visits, prepare and verify the documents, and present them to Italian veterinary and customs authorities to ensure a smooth border crossing.

DOG AND CATS

Birds have stricter health requirements when entering Italy:

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 48 hours before travel, stating they are free from infectious diseases.

  • CITES permits for protected or endangered species (such as parrots, cockatoos or macaws).

  • Pre-notification to Italian veterinary authorities (Ministero della Salute) prior to arrival.

  • Possible quarantine or controlled isolation for birds from non-EU countries.

Our team manages all permits, liaises with border veterinary offices and, if necessary, arranges quarantine facilities.

⚠️Italy enforces strict controls on exotic birds (parrots, parakeets, cockatoos) due to illegal trafficking. CITES permits are mandatory.

BIRDS

SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

Small pets require their own set of documents:

  • Veterinary certificate of good health issued within 10 days before travel.

  • Microchip and rabies vaccine for ferrets (mandatory).

  • No vaccination required for rodents or rabbits, but they must be clinically healthy and disease-free.

  • Transport is limited to a maximum of 5 animals per non-commercial movement.

We ensure all the documentation is correctly completed and submitted to Italian authorities, making the process simple and stress-free for you.

MOST TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN ITALY

In Italy, the most commonly transported animals are dogs and cats, especially for families relocating between major cities like Roma, Milán or Florencia.

Birds (such as parrots, cockatiels and canaries) are also frequently moved, particularly among breeders and enthusiasts.

We also transport many small mammals including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters and other rodents, ensuring stress-free conditions adapted to their sensitive nature.

Our vehicles are temperature-controlled, and our handlers are trained to work with all species, including shy or nervous pets. No matter the size or temperament, we offer fully tailored care.
