DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT PETS IN COLOMBIA
Pet transport in Colombia is regulated by the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA).
Depending on whether your pet is travelling domestically or internationally, specific requirements must be met
DOG AND CATS

Dogs and cats are the most transported animals in Colombia, and the ICA requires:
-
Microchip identification (recommended but not always mandatory for domestic travel).
-
Valid rabies vaccination certificate: Required for all dogs and cats over 3 months of age. Vaccine must be applied at least 30 days before travel and not older than 12 months.
-
Veterinary health certificate: Issued by a licensed vet within 10 days of travel.
-
International Health Certificate (for exports): Must be endorsed by ICA before departure.
⚠️Special note in Colombia: Some municipalities (such as Bogotá and Medellín) have stricter vaccination and breed-specific regulations. For example, potentially dangerous breeds may require proof of insurance or additional documentation
BIRDS

Colombia has one of the richest bird biodiversities in the world, which means bird transport is heavily regulated:
-
ICA import/export permit required for all bird movements.
-
CITES permits mandatory for exotic or endangered species (parrots, macaws, cockatoos, etc.).
-
Veterinary health certificate issued within 72 hours of travel.
-
Strict restrictions apply to native species, which are protected by Colombian law and generally cannot be exported or imported.
⚠️Birds are subject to very strict environmental controls, and illegal trafficking is heavily penalised.
SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

For small mammals, ICA requires:
-
Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
-
Rabies vaccination: Required for ferrets. Rabbits and rodents generally do not need rabies vaccines but must be clinically healthy.
-
Import/export permits: May be required for commercial shipments or exotic animals.
⚠️ Certain exotic small mammals may require special authorisation from ICA and the Ministry of Environment, especially if they belong to species considered invasive or protected.
MOST TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN COLOMBIA
The most commonly transported pets in Colombia include:
-
Dogs: Especially small breeds like French Bulldogs, Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers, very popular in urban areas.
-
Cats: Domestic cats are frequently transported between Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.
-
Birds: Parakeets, cockatiels, and canaries are among the most common transported species (always under ICA control).
-
Small mammals: Rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets are less frequent but also regulated under ICA standards.
Every relocation is adapted to meet Colombian veterinary and legal requirements, ensuring a safe and seamless travel experience for your pet.
