PET TRAVEL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR NETHERLANDS

To transport pets into or within the Netherlands, it is mandatory to comply with Dutch and EU regulations.

We take care of all veterinary visits, paperwork and customs formalities, ensuring that every requirement is correctly fulfilled before travel.

For dogs and cats travelling to or within the Netherlands, you need:

  • EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate issued by an authorised veterinarian.

  • Valid rabies vaccination, administered at least 21 days before entry.

  • Microchip identification compliant with ISO 11784/11785 standards.

  • Tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment for dogs coming from specific risk countries.

  • Clinical veterinary examination confirming the pet is healthy to travel.

We coordinate all the veterinary steps and submit documentation to the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to guarantee compliance.

⚠️ Although the former “pit bull ban” was lifted in 2009, the Netherlands still applies strict behavioral checks and mandatory microchipping. Dangerous breeds may face tighter controls.

DOG AND CATS

BIRDS

For birds, the Netherlands requires:

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 48 hours of travel.

  • CITES permits for protected or exotic species such as parrots, cockatoos or macaws.

  • Advance notification to Dutch veterinary border authorities.

  • Possible quarantine for birds arriving from non-EU countries.

We manage the entire process including paperwork, border veterinary inspections and any required quarantine arrangements.

⚠️Strong restrictions apply to invasive species such as monk parakeets. Some exotic species require special import permits or are banned.

SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

For small animals like ferrets, rabbits and rodents, you need:

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.

  • Rabies vaccination and microchip (mandatory for ferrets).

  • Rodents and rabbits do not need rabies vaccination but must be clinically healthy.

  • Maximum of 5 animals per non-commercial transport.

We ensure all documents are correct and accepted by Dutch authorities, guaranteeing a legal, safe and stress-free transport for your small pets.

⚠️ Certain exotic rodents and small mammals are banned under the Dutch Animal Law to protect native biodiversity.

MOST TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN NETHERLANDS

In the Netherlands, the most commonly transported animals are dogs and cats, especially for relocations between cities like Ámsterdam, Róterdam and Utrecht.

We also frequently transport birds such as canaries, parakeets, parrots and cockatiels, as well as small mammals including ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other rodents.

Each animal’s journey is tailored to their species, size, age, temperament and specific care requirements to ensure maximum safety and comfort.
