DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT PETS IN URUGUAY
Uruguay requires compliance with MGAP’s import and health regulations. The documents and conditions vary depending on the species:
DOG AND CATS

Dogs and cats are the most commonly transported animals in Uruguay. Requirements include:

Microchip identification (ISO standard recommended).

Valid rabies vaccination certificate: Mandatory for pets over 3 months old, issued at least 30 days before travel and valid for 1 year.

Official veterinary health certificate: Issued within 10 days of travel by an accredited vet in the country of origin.

Import permit from MGAP: Required for all incoming pets.

Parasite treatments: Internal and external deworming must be certified on the health certificate.
⚠️Special rule: Uruguay occasionally requires additional vaccines (such as distemper or parvovirus for dogs) depending on the epidemiological situation in the origin country.
BIRDS

For birds, Uruguay enforces strict controls to prevent disease and protect biodiversity:

Veterinary health certificate issued within 72 hours of travel.

Import permit from MGAP.

CITES documentation for exotic species like parrots, cockatoos, or macaws.

Quarantine period may apply depending on origin country.
⚠️Important: Native species of Uruguay, such as the ñandú or certain small songbirds, are strictly protected and cannot be exported or imported without special authorisation.
SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)


Small mammals can also be transported, but requirements include:

Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days before travel.

Rabies vaccination required for ferrets. Rabbits and rodents do not need rabies vaccination but must be certified healthy.

Import permit from MGAP, especially for non-native or exotic animals.
⚠️Special rule: Exotic species may also require approval from DINAMA (Dirección Nacional de Medio Ambiente) in addition to MGAP clearance.
MOST TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN URUGUAY
The most frequently transported pets in Uruguay include:
