DOG AND CATS

-
Dogs and cats are the most frequently transported animals in Brazil. To move them within or outside the country, the following documents are generally required:
-
Microchip identification (ISO standard).
-
Valid rabies vaccination certificate: Required for all dogs and cats over 3 months of age. Must be administered at least 30 days before travel and renewed annually.
-
Veterinary health certificate (CVI – Certificado Veterinário Internacional): Issued by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA). Valid for a short period (typically 10 days for travel).
-
Import/Export permit: For international journeys, additional permits may be needed depending on the destination.
⚠️Special rule in Brazil: Some states, like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, may require proof of up-to-date vaccinations beyond rabies (such as for leptospirosis or canine distemper) when travelling domestically.
BIRDS

Bird transport in Brazil is highly regulated to protect local biodiversity. Requirements include:
-
IBAMA (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis) authorisation for native species.
-
CITES permits for exotic or endangered species such as parrots, macaws, or cockatoos.
-
Veterinary health certificate issued within 3 days of travel.
-
Possible quarantine periods for imports coming from countries with avian influenza risks.
⚠️Birds are subject to strict control in Brazil, and transporting them without proper permits can result in heavy penalties.
SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

Small mammals are less commonly transported in Brazil, but specific rules still apply:
-
Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
-
Rabies vaccination and microchip: Mandatory for ferrets.
-
Rabbits and rodents: Do not require rabies vaccination but must be clinically healthy.
-
Import permits may be necessary for exotic or non-native species.
⚠️ Some exotic rodents and mammals may be restricted under Brazilian wildlife protection laws, so prior authorisation from IBAMA is required.
MOST TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN BRAZIL
In Brazil, the most commonly transported pets include:
-
Dogs: Particularly medium and large breeds like Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Brazilian Terriers, often relocated due to family moves.
-
Cats: Both mixed-breed and purebred cats are frequently transported, especially between major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília.
-
Birds: Brazil has a strong bird-keeping tradition, with canaries, parrots, and cockatiels among the most transported species.
-
Small mammals: Ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits are also moved regularly, though in smaller numbers compared to dogs and cats.
Each animal’s journey is carefully adapted to its species, age, and temperament, ensuring safety and wellbeing during transport.
