DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT PETS IN CHINA

China has strict entry rules for pets, which vary depending on species and country of origin.

The process is closely supervised by GACC.

DOG AND CATS

Dogs and cats are the only companion animals officially recognised for import as pets in China. Key requirements include:

  • Microchip identification: Must comply with ISO standards.

  • Valid rabies vaccination certificate: Rabies vaccine is mandatory, given at least 30 days before travel but within 12 months.

  • Official veterinary health certificate: Issued within 14 days of travel by a government-authorised vet.

  • Rabies antibody titer test (RNATT): Required if coming from countries not recognised as rabies-free. Must be performed in a GACC-approved lab.

  • Entry points: Pets must arrive through designated ports of entry (e.g., Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou).

⚠️Special rule: China allows only one pet (dog or cat) per passenger for import. Additional pets require commercial import procedures.

BIRDS

Pet bird import into China is highly restricted:

  • Import permit from MARA required.

  • Veterinary health certificate with disease-free status.

  • CITES documentation mandatory for exotic species.

  • Birds often face quarantine requirements of 30 days at an authorised facility.

⚠️Important: In practice, importing pet birds into China is extremely difficult and sometimes not permitted, depending on origin country.

SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

China enforces strict restrictions on small mammals:

  • Official import permit is required, and only certain species may be accepted.

  • Veterinary health certificate must confirm they are disease-free.

  • Ferrets generally require rabies vaccination, while rabbits and rodents may face restrictions depending on the health status of the origin country.

⚠️Special rule: Many provinces do not allow the import of rodents and rabbits as pets, treating them as livestock. Always check with local customs before travel.

MOST  TRANSPORTED ANIMALS IN CHINA

The most frequently transported pets into and out of China include:

  • Dogs: Small companion breeds like Poodles, Pomeranians, French Bulldogs, and Shiba Inus are very popular in cities.

  • Cats: Domestic short-haired cats, British Shorthairs, and Persians are among the most common.

  • Other pets: Birds and small mammals are rare imports due to regulatory restrictions, but rabbits and hamsters are kept locally as common pets.

Every transport is carefully organised to ensure compliance, comfort, and peace of mind for both pets and their owners.
