DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO TRANSPORT PETS IN HUNGARY

Hungary, as part of the European Union, follows EU-wide pet transport regulations. Each animal type has specific requirements:

DOG AND CATS

Dogs and cats are the most commonly transported pets in Hungary. To enter or travel within the country, they require:

  • Microchip identification (ISO 11784/11785 compliant).

  • Valid rabies vaccination certificate: Administered at least 21 days before travel.

  • EU Pet Passport or official veterinary health certificate.

  • Veterinary clinical check within 48 hours of travel.

⚠️Special rule: Hungary is particularly strict on ensuring rabies vaccination validity. Pets without proper vaccination records may be denied entry or quarantined.

BIRDS

Transporting birds into Hungary is possible but requires:

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 72 hours of travel.

  • CITES documentation for protected or exotic species such as parrots, cockatoos, or macaws.

  • Possible quarantine if coming from non-EU countries.

⚠️Note: Hungary may impose temporary restrictions on bird imports during avian flu outbreaks.

SMALL MAMMALS (RODENTS, RABBITS, FERRETS)

Small animals are also allowed to travel into Hungary but under specific rules:

  • Veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days before travel.

  • Rabies vaccination + microchip mandatory for ferrets.

  • Rabbits and rodents do not require rabies vaccination but must be clinically healthy.

  • Maximum of 5 animals per non-commercial transport.

⚠️Special rule: Hungary enforces a strict health control for ferrets, requiring proof of rabies vaccination and sometimes additional parasite treatment.
